Cleanup on Sugarloaf Island

Today's clean up of this island in the middle of Morehead City harbor, and to be a Morehead City Park, was the most successful yet, if success is measured by the volume of trash attained. We want to get it to Zero and keep it that way.

Left to right in the picture are, Marie Justen, from Spooners Creek, Matt Haynes, from Newport, Pam Bader, hiding behind the " Watershed Protection" sign of the NC Coastal Land Management Trust Fund, she is from Emerald Isle, John Heupel, from Morehead City, Bob Bader, from Emerald Isle, Jim Stevens form New Bern. Elmer Eddy, from Swansboro took the picture.

David McCabe, and other city employees, will work on the island on Thursday to remove what we have piled up. Canoes and kayaks can't handle it. There is loads more of it back at the high tide line in the woods. We hope they can get it all.

Next Saturday we will revisit the island and paddle around it and explore all over it and hope we will be able to declare it to be cleared of all litter and trash. If not we will follow up on the following Saturday.

On Wednesday next we will do a 10 mile section of our New Bern to Morehead paddle trail if weather permits. If it is too windy, we will do Hunters Creek. The old sawdust pile area is trashed again. Elmer
