15 7:00 p.m. Newport Town Hall. we are holding a meeting to talk to people about clearing the rest of the debris out of the Newport River.  A great deal of it was removed a year ago but of course more always appears.  The purpose of the meeting is to create a stakesholders group made up of people who can get out there once in a while and clear debris like Michael Banks deoes on the White Oak.
We want to demonstrate that the river can be kept clear and usable in an environmentally friendly way and fairly inexpensviely so that folks can ask the county for $1000 once in a while, not 100,000 every ten years.   We have some money to pay a contractor to do the big stuff.  And our wonderful logger, the Paul Bunyan of the White Oak, i.e. Big John will be there with Michael Banks to discuss methodology.
Another of our purposes is to demonstrate to the county and DOT and DWR that there is a concerned community dedicated to the Newport River so maybe we can apply for a grant to build a safe landing on Roberts Road or Nine Mile Road with a brochure describing the river and the Wilderness Pocosin (how cool is that).  Anyway, would love it if you can help spread the word.
